While she purchased this raw canvas in London prior to 1908 (evidenced by the Augustus Walker stencil), Constance Peters did not marry Charles Rollo Peters and adopt the name "Constance Peters" until 1909. Because she signed the face of this painting using her married surname, the work could not have been executed during her student years in Europe—she brought the blank canvas back to California and painted it after her arrival in Monterey.
