Isabel Hunter (1865-1941) Pastel PPIE "Jewel City" 1915. Signed. Excellent condition. 17.5"h x 17.5"w. Frame 24" x 24". An exquisite and rare pastel by California Impressionist Isabel Hunter, capturing the Palace of Horticulture at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE). The Palace of Horticulture was renowned for its massive glass dome—larger than St. Peter’s Basilica—and its innovative nocturnal illumination. At night, searchlights projected through revolving colored screens created an "electric kaleidoscope" effect, making the dome glow like an immense fire opal. Hunter captures this ethereal quality with a clarity and sensitivity to light that reflects her training under William Keith.
