Edgar Walter (1877-1938) California Academy of Sciences Historic Bronze Seahorse 1923. Unsigned (these were never signed). Excellent original patina. 24"h with stand x 9"w. Base 5.5" x 5.5". Exceptional, historic patinated bronze architectural seahorse finial, originally designed by renowned San Francisco sculptor Edgar Walter. This beautifully modeled piece features a stylized, grid-textured body and a rich, deep-toned historic patina. It was cast circa 1923 by C. J. Hillard and Company as part of the decorative balustrade system for the iconic Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. Decades later, this historic architectural element was repurposed by the institution as a prestigious presentation award. It was formally gifted to U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and her husband, prominent businessman and philanthropist Richard C. Blum, in deep appreciation for their monumental, lifelong support of the Academy.
