Secessionist

German Secessionist Copper & Brass Handled Cylinder Vase c1900. Unsigned. Some slight wear to excellent original patina. 11.5"h x 5.75"w A striking example of early 20th-century German Secessionist design, reflecting the elegance and modernist shift of the Jugendstil movement. This cylindrical vase is constructed from hand-wrought copper with a rich, dark original patina, accented by three angular brass "buttress" handles. The handles feature intricate openwork cutouts in stylized geometric and scroll motifs, a hallmark of the avant-garde metalwork emerging from Germany and Austria at the turn of the century. This specific architectural "buttress" form is highly historically significant, as it directly influenced later American Arts & Crafts icons, most notably the vases designed by Karl Kipp for the Roycroft Shops c1910.
