Grueby Faience Co Three-Tile "Oasis" Landscape Frieze c1905. Signed on edge of one of the tiles. Invisible professional restoration to two corners. Each tile 12" x 12". Frame 42"w x 17"h. This frieze was a collaborative effort of C. Grant LaFarge and Addison LeBoutillier for the Grueby. This triptych represents a premier collaboration between Addison LeBoutillier, Grueby’s visionary Director of Design who pioneered the company’s iconic Mission aesthetic, and renowned architect C. Grant LaFarge. As the principal architect of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, LaFarge was instrumental in integrating Grueby’s decorative "paintings in clay" into major American architectural landmarks. His masterful approach to color and light was a direct inheritance from his father, the legendary painter and stained-glass innovator John La Farge. Together, LaFarge and LeBoutillier elevated tile-making from simple building material to a sophisticated fine art.
