Hugh Robertson Chelsea Pottery Sang de Boeuf Flambe Experimental Vase c1891-1895. Signed with impressed CPUS cloverleaf mark. Factory-original roughness and wheel-grinding to base foot rim, otherwise perfect condition. 7.5"h x 4.5"d. The unglazed white clay base features a clear, unique streak of red oxblood glaze slashing across the foot rim at the 3 o'clock position directly over the grinding marks. This physical evidence definitively documents Hugh C. Robertson's trial method: the raw clay body was fired and wheel-ground flat first to manage the base's stability before the volatile copper-red glaze was applied for its final high-heat kiln run.
