5742. Rare McHugh Furniture Co – Bernard Maybeck inspired side chair c1898 with elaborate carved and painted design added post-production c1902.
Maybeck designed the original version of this chair for the Swedenborgian Church in San Francisco in 1893. Since Maybeck stopped making his chairs shortly after 1893, he likely ordered the McHugh versions for his various projects as they routinely show up in projects such as Wyntoon near Mt Shasta for William Randolph Heart.
This chair has an L&JG Stickley-like carved signature but pre-dates the use of the mark by 3 years. Excellent original finish. Hand-woven rush seat perfectly replaced. 37″h x 21″w x 20″d SOLD
